Facts about Azalea
Known by a number of names in the past, Azalea is found in Douglas County. Some of the names that the unincorporated community has gone by in years past include Booth, and the more colorful names of Starveout and Starve Out.
The present name is inspired by the great number of azaleas to be found in the community. Two examples are the Azaleastrum albiflorum and the Azalea occidentalis.
The earliest known post office in the community was established in 1888, as the Starveout post office. In 1907, the name of the post office and the community became Booth. The present name of Azalea comes from 1914. There was also a second post office in the area that bore the name of Azalea from 1899 to 1909.
The present total population for Azalea is estimated to be in excess of 750 residents. The median age in the community is 61.7. More than half the citizens of Azalea are male.
